Tablets have gotten all the attention over the past couple of years, but some users need or simply prefer the notebook form factor. Why settle for one or the other when you can have both? Convertible devices enable you to transition back and forth between tablet and notebook. Dell Rugged Mobility Solutions recently announced a new 12-inch convertible device, as well as an update to its 14-inch rugged notebook. Here, Patrick Seidensticker, director of product technology at Dell Rugged Mobility Solutions, tells us about the two new products.
Field Technologies: What was the catalyst for Dell’s introduction of the new 12-inch convertible, the Latitude 12 Rugged Extreme? What need do you feel this product addresses in the marketplace?
Seidensticker: Dell Rugged Solutions maintains deep, ongoing relationships with our customers to understand their business needs in order to best address them with each new generation and product we introduce. Recently, those customer conversations have highlighted a demand for a ruggedized solution that bridges the need for mobility in a notebook and tablet form factor. For field service workers — computing on their feet, looking up work orders, getting invoices signed, etc. — tablets have become a wildly effective tool, but the need for a durable solution remained. The Latitude 12 Rugged Extreme answers that need for versatility by combining high mobility with full performance in a ruggedized form. It provides an optimized degree of mobility and lighter weight for on-the-go usage by field workers with the convertible ability to be used as a fully functioning notebook when needed.
