The Night LeBron James Needed Field Service Management

On Sunday evening, June 8, during the first game of the best-of-seven NBA Championship Series, much of the sports-watching world – including me – saw NBA superstar LeBron James suddenly unable to move due to a leg cramp. Nine other Miami Heat and San Antonio Spurs players ran to the opposite end of the court as James froze. He was finally carried off the floor.
James’s leg had locked up, according to the Miami Herald, because of “severe cramping, caused by dehydration and the sauna-like conditions on the court,” which was caused by a broken air conditioning system. This, said the Herald, “robbed James of a chance to finish the game and reduced him to a spectator.”
“My body just shut down,” James told the Herald. “Nothing I could do about it.”
After James left the game, the Spurs trampled the Heat, who had been only two points behind when James left, and won the first game of the series. No matter who wins the championship, the fact is that a failure in an HVAC system changed the course of the game, the series and basketball history.
