Tablet PC With GPS Helps Improve Fleet Management
This article by Derek Oja at MobileDemand takes a look at the fleet management business and the advantages that a GPS-enabled rugged tablet PC can provide to these operations. Traditionally fleet managers have had trouble monitoring performance or gathering enough accurate data to identify and implement improvements to boost productivity, but GPS-enabled rugged tablet PCs can allow transportation providers to be proactive.
At times, employees can be unaware (or aware) that they are operating a vehicle in ways that waste fuel and increase wear-and-tear, both of which drive up costs. However, by deploying a tablet PC to each vehicle, locations can be monitored in real time and information can be collected about how the vehicle is being used thanks to GPS and wireless connectivity. With GPS tracking, more efficient routes can be found automatically, saving drivers the hassle and time of using maps to plot routes or circling around looking for their destination.
Daily schedules and directions with maps can be sent directly to each vehicle’s rugged tablet PC by dispatchers, letting drivers remain on the road and not have to return to the office before beginning each shift or individual job. With near-constant communication, dispatchers can also provide drivers with information on traffic patterns and /or last-minute customer changes, allowing them to change their routes on-the-fly to avoid problems and keep customers happy.
