White Paper: Selecting A Portable Printer For Mobile Computing Applications

Mobile computing penetrates a myriad of Mobile Computing applications, including field service, field sales, data collection, and ticketing. Each of these applications often require some type of print capability while in the field. The need for printing varies. On the one hand, simple output for a simple receipt or a penalty ticket requires plain text. Even a credit card receipt is fairly simple to print. In other applications like invoicing, complex reports, service records, and machine readable receipts, more complicated output is required. It’s clear that different applications have different requirements and needs, thus there are many factors to consider when choosing a portable printer. Unfortunately, selection of a portable printer that will work for your application is not just a case of doing a quick web search.

At a recent Thermal and Ink Jet printing conference , Endre D. Vargha, President of Global Management Resources, Inc. in San Luis Obispo, California, USA provided some guidelines for portable printer design which are appropriate for printer selection:

Primary Application

  • Reliability
  • Easy to Load, Simple to Operate
  • Compact Size
  • Light Weight
  • Battery Capacity and Life
  • Maximum Roll Capacity
  • System Integration and Connectivity

The following paragraphs will explore these guidelines and provide insight on selecting the portable printer for you and your customers.
