Rugged Mobile Computers Help Move Tons Of Freight

Source: DRS Technologies

An intermodal system combines the efficiency of rail transportation with the pick-up and delivery advantages of trucking. CSX Intermodal, one of the nation’s largest coast-tocoast intermodal transportation providers, moves tons of freight with the help of rugged mobile computers that weigh less than five pounds.

CSX Intermodal’s early experience with mobile computers, even some that were billed as ‘rugged,’ was unsatisfactory. “We were averaging a 70 percent failure rate on the older vehicle-mounted units,” the project manager recalls. He notes that because these computers were not designed for easy docking, swapping them out for service resulted in additional downtime.

Works as hard as a hostler
The ARMOR X10gx rugged tablet computer meets or exceed every one of CSX Intermodal’s requirements, including supporting freight management software and remote network connectivity. Designed, manufactured and qualified to pass MIL-STD-810F or -810G, all ARMOR units are tested for drop-shock, moisture, dust and vibration resistance, temperature extremes, as well as other demanding conditions mobile workers face daily. The 10.4-inch LCD touch-screen, which is scratch resistant and large enough to use easily without blocking the operator’s view, employs backlight technology for enhanced viewability, even in direct sunlight.
