Accurate, timely distribution of data and creation of enforcement materials in the field is a necessary function of professionals in public safety. For many years these professionals had to rely on radio communications alone for receipt of critical information they needed to do their jobs, and on handwriting for summons, citations, and other documentation they needed to issue.

Much changed with the move toward equipping officers with laptop PCs or handheld computers and the advent of high- speed wireless communication to those devices. Officers could receive more detailed information almost instantly. But handwriting remained the primary mode of producing the documents they needed – and handwriting issues could lead to problems of accuracy, interpretation, and ultimately successful prosecution and collection of revenues from traffic and other citations. As more technology was placed in a vehicle, however, available space became even more of a premium.

Integrating mobile printing solutions with vehicle-installed PCs and handhelds helped to minimize the need for handwriting, and the more recent trend toward e-citations technology accelerated the transition. Many public safety entities deployed vehicle-mounted “mobile” inkjet printers for full-page documents, and small-format mobile printers for e-citations, parking violations and other documents.
