Advanced Imaging Technology Enables Age Verification by Reading PDF-417 Bar Codes on Driver’s Licenses

January 10, 2007 – PSC Inc., an international market leader in data-collection technology and services, announces immediate availability of the Magellan® 1400i Omni-Directional presentation bar code scanner for retail point-of-sale (POS) applications. The product will be shown in New York January 15-17, 2007 at NRF Booth #2831.

“Our design objectives were to improve checkout productivity while adding capabilities to extend the typical life of the scanner”, said Matt Schler, PSC’s Vice President of Retail Scanning. “We developed a bar code scanner that is faster at capturing hard-toread labels, incorporates PDF decoding, and has outstanding ergonomics with an excellent price-to-value ratio.”

Designed for harsh in-store environments, the Magellan 1400i scanner employs advanced imaging technology featuring solidstate construction which eliminates the spinning mirrors and motors associated with laser scanning technology, increasing reliability and durability.

The Magellan 1400i delivers the highest presentation scanning performance available and its small footprint increases valuable counter selling space, critical to convenience, drug and specialty stores. Additionally, by reading bar codes found on most drivers’ licenses, the Magellan 1400i scanner enables applications using automated age-verification.

To reduce operator training, the Magellan 1400i scanner intuitively supports both presentation and sweep scanning styles. Its large scan volume, ergonomic grips for handheld use, and capacity for targeted scanning of bar code lists all combine to deliver the highest performance, reliability, and value available in a compact design.
