Making The Case For Real-Time Trailer Management At Coca-Cola Bottling Consolidated

Source: Spireon, Inc.

Next time you hold a can of Coke in your hand, consider the journey it took to get there. The company largely responsible for getting that Coke to its final destination on time is Coca-Cola Bottling Consolidated (CCBCC). Each year, CCBCC produces roughly 160 million cases of soft drinks. That breaks down to 14,700 cases sold each hour, or four cases sold per second. Now consider the logistical complexities involved with making sure those cases get loaded, transported and delivered to the right place, at the right time.

Challenge: Show Me The Trailers

Growth naturally comes with growing pains. As CCBCC’s distribution network spread wider, their trailer assets became increasingly more difficult to manage. “The problem was not having the right number and right type of trailers at the right location at the right time,” explains Hopkins. “Let’s just say I was getting some angry phone calls from manufacturers who had cases ready to load, and no trailers to load them onto.”

To address the problem, CCBCC started renting and leasing more trailers at a significant cost. With rental and leasing costs averaging between $300 and $600 a month for typical organizations, these expenses start to add up. For CCBCC, this added investment wasn’t paying off. Even with the additional leased and rented assets, the company continued to see an imbalance in their fleet distribution, with too many trailers at certain locations and too few trailers at others.
