Case Study
At a leading Denver hospital, administrators had adopted a “lean thinking” mentality and were focused on process improvement and finding ways to reduce costs without compromising patient safety. They realized that a real-time location system (RTLS) could help meet these goals, and after a bond was passed to construct a new hospital wing and implement cutting-edge technology, the hospital chose to deploy InnerWireless’ location management platform called PanGo.

The hospital leveraged its existing Cisco network, and within a few months, it was using PanGo’s active tags and easy-to-use software application to better control inventory and monitor equipment maintenance and repair throughout the 1.5-million-square-foot facility.

Now, the hospital’s biomedical and central supply departments have a better understanding of how equipment moves throughout the hospital, and they are able to locate and track expensive, critical equipment, such as wound vacuums, to make better-informed leasing and purchasing decisions. For instance, wound vacuums are leased by the day and can’t follow a patient through the hospital, which often results in multiple clinicians ordering wound vacuums for the same patient. Because the patient can only be charged for one, the hospital pays for the unused equipment, and unbillable costs quickly begin to aggregate. PanGo’s real-time visibility and analysis of the location and status of key assets also has helped control spending on frequently used items, such as infusion pumps and wheelchairs.

Additionally, the system’s real-time alerts have improved the response time for equipment maintenance and repairs, while accumulated data has enabled hospital administrators to identify wasteful processes. PanGo also has increased the workflow and efficiency of clinicians and staff, as well as enhanced patient care and safety, because critical items can now be located quicker.

The hospital plans to further adopt PanGo and is currently determining how other departments can benefit from the technology to continue to improve processes, workflow, the hospital’s bottom line, and most important, the patient experience.

Product Description
PanGo is the first location management platform to aggregate location data from a variety of RTLS (real-time location system) and RFID sources and integrate it into the enterprise in a standards-based way – delivering a cost-optimized, future-proof solution for location-enabling the extended enterprise.

By providing support for multiple RTLS and RFID technologies, PanGo offers users the ability to select the suite of technologies that best suit their enterprise-wide location needs. And with its visualization tool, PanGo is the only asset tracking application that provides a seamless (Web-based) view of thousands of assets regardless of the RTLS or RFID technology used to track them – 802.11, 802.15.4, passive RFID, or ultra wideband.

Through this combination of features, PanGo offers a solution specifically designed to give business users real-time visibility, real-time alerts, and real-time analysis about the location and status of key assets.
