IEEE ComSoc Introduces 2009 Wireless Engineering Body Of Knowledge Guidebook
New Educational Resource Highlights the Evolution of Wireless Technologies & Common Best Practices for Industry Professionals
The IEEE Communications Society (IEEE ComSoc), the leading worldwide professional organization dedicated to the advancement of communications technologies, has announced the availability of the 2009 version of A Guide to the Wireless Engineering Body of Knowledge (WEBOK). The 272-page guidebook was developed as an educational resource for the organization's Wireless Communication Engineering Technologies (IEEE WCET) Certification Program as well as for wireless industry professionals seeking comprehensive knowledge on commonly accepted best practices and the evolution of wireless technologies.
"This guide represents the cumulative efforts of the IEEE Communications Society and an international body of wireless industry professionals," says Celia Desmond, IEEE WCET program director. "We believe the WEBOK will become an indispensable resource for everyone involved in the wireless industry, no matter their level or area of expertise."
"The dynamic growth and globalization of the wireless communications industry has created the demand for a common language and set of tools," adds Rolf Frantz, the program's industry relations manager. "The WEBOK was specifically developed to provide wireless industry professionals worldwide with a common technical and global understanding of the core principles involved in wide ranging wireless communications technologies."
Edited by Gustavo Giannattasio and published by John Wiley and Sons, a leading publisher of scientific and technical information, the WEBOK contains the content and contributions of more than 50 selected international wireless communications experts. Each chapter is dedicated to the evolution, impact and common best practices of one of the following seven technical areas:
- Wireless access technologies
- Network and service architecture
- Network management and security
- Radio frequency engineering, propagation and antennas
- Facilities infrastructure
- Agreements, standards, policies and regulations
- Wireless engineering fundamentals
Since the WEBOK contains a large number of references and suggestions for further reading, it is also an excellent resource for increasing the understanding of wireless communications and evolving industry standards. In addition, while the WEBOK is not designed as a study guide for the IEEE WCET examination, it does provide an ideal resource for reviewing the covered topics.
Launched in 2008 by IEEE ComSoc and an international collection of industry experts, the IEEE WCET Program provides eligible candidates with a quantifiable method for demonstrating their expertise in wireless communications to employers based throughout the world. To qualify for the IEEE Wireless Communication Professional (IEEE WCP) credential, individuals with a bachelor's or comparable degree from an accredited institution and at least three years of professional wireless engineering experience must pass the comprehensive examination. The next IEEE WCET exam window will be open from 12 October – 31 October 2009. The application period will begin 6 July and extend through 4 September 2009.
Interested professionals are urged to visit the IEEE WCET web site located at www.ieee-wcet.org for program information and updates including eligibility requirements, testing dates and locations, application information including deadlines, examination specifications, links to training organizations, and free resources such as a glossary, a list of references, and sample questions for helping candidates thoroughly prepare for the exam. Other resources available to support the IEEE WCET program include free subscriptions to the bi-monthly IEEE Wireless Communications Professional electronic newsletter and a free copy of the 2009 Candidate's Handbook covering policies, subject area details, reference sources, and sample questions.
The Wireless Engineering Body of Knowledge (WEBOK) is currently available at bookstores and can be ordered from Wiley publishers at www.wiley.com for the suggested retail price of $69.95. The WEBOK can also be purchased directly from the IEEE WCET web site; early orders that cite the WEBK9 promotional code will receive a discount of approximately 30 percent on the cover price.
