HTML5: Hype Or Help?

Source: FieldOne Systems

This white paper from FieldOne takes a look at mobile application (app) development and the underlying technologies that drive these apps, specficially HTML5. Apps can either be standalone software designed to work with a specific mobile device’s operating system (a “native app”) or designed to operate in a device’s web browser which simulates an app’s various screens, controls, and visual elements.

Modern app developers choosing the browser-based approach will often choose to do so using HTML5. HTML5 is the newest iteration of HTML, the coding language which has been running web pages for about two decades. The advantages of HTML5 come from its ability to produce rich, interactive media content without the need for add-ons and plug-ins that may not be available, like Adobe Flash.

This white paper notes, “HTML5 has plenty of other advantages, but for our discussion, suffice it to say that it’s simply the next evolution of the Web’s standard markup language.” The popularity of application development for mobile devices in HTML5 stems from the adaptability of the platform, allowing developers to create a single version of their app and have nearly any mobile phone or tablet with a browser be able to run the app (because it is really just a web page).
