Thor VM2 improves supply chain productivity by minimizing worker down-time and maintenance costs

Chicago and Fort Mill, S.C. – Honeywell (NYSE: HON) today announced the Thor VM2, its tenth generation vehicle-mount computer (VMC) that provides the mobile workforce with unprecedented flexibility and productivity.  Featuring a larger 9.7 inch XGA display screen, the Thor VM2 builds off the successful Thor VM1, utilizing breakthrough mobile technology to create immediate time savings and protection against unplanned disruptions in the supply chain.

Equipped with a field-replaceable front panel, the Thor VM2 integrates the two most damage-prone device components, the keyboard and touchscreen, into a user-replaceable part.  As a result, users can repair the most common forms of vehicle-mount computer malfunctions on the go, reducing maintenance cost and spare parts capital cost.

The Quick Mount Smart Dock maximizes user efficiency by allowing users to swap out the VM2 in less than 10 seconds to accommodate vehicle failures without dropping an active work session or to reallocate computers as work load shifts.  For example, supply chain workers can undock the VM2 from one forklift and dock it on a second vehicle without missing a single transaction. Both the Thor VM2 and VM1 are compatible with the Quick Mount Smart Dock.
With the Thor VM2’s Ignition Control, units can be configured to automatically hibernate or standby at a user set time after the ignition switch is turned off, eliminating the maintenance expenses and lost productivity caused by a dead vehicle battery. Alternatively, the “Auto On” function triggers a direct current (DC) power connection, removing the need for an on/off switch.

“Our commitment to supply chain innovation is constantly evolving to address challenges our customers face working in unpredictable environments,” Taylor Smith, director of product management, Honeywell Scanning and Mobility. “We have improved upon our legacy line of vehicle-mount computers to develop a streamlined device that enables dramatic productivity gains in the supply chain.”

The Thor VM2 features a fast 1.6GHz Atom Z530 processor, and the 802.11 WLAN radio and Bluetooth® wireless connectivity are standard features.  The optional WWAN radio provides connectivity for ports, yards and other outdoor applications.  The Thor VM2 runs on the Microsoft® Windows CE 6.0, optimal for task-specific warehouse activities and management, or Windows® Embedded Standard operating system for extension and portability of the desktop/laptop environment.

The Thor VM2 is compatible with Honeywell’s Remote MasterMind™ 3.0 device management software, the only single-console scanning and mobility software suite, to remotely secure a lost device, enroll and configure devices, track company assets and enforce strong password protection.  Honeywell’s RFTerm terminal emulation software is available for both operating systems.

The Thor VM2 will debut at the ProMat trade show in Chicago and will begin shipping in February.
