Honeywell Batteries' NEOcells™ Reach Performance Milestone

Source: Field Technologies Magazine

NATICK, Mass. — Honeywell Batteries announced today that it has achieved a significant breakthrough in battery performance with its new NEOcell™ lithium polymer cells.

In independently monitored laboratory tests, NEOcell battery packs successfully reached more than 700 charge cycles while maintaining more than 80% of their capacity. This compares to approximately 500 cycles for lithium ion cells.

The tested battery packs are replacements for the leading OEM two-way radios used by U.S. government agencies. The battery packs were manufactured using 4100mAh NEOcell Lithium Polymer cells. This is an increase in run time and cycle life of approximately 150% over the OEM’s standard 1650mAh nickel cadmium pack.

NEOcell lithium polymer cells are safer and more powerful than Lithium Ion, and can be manufactured in almost any shape. They are especially useful in rugged conditions — the cells can be punctured and still operate safely. In addition, they are more environment friendly than the common nickel based chemistries.

Dave Rose, director of technical services for Honeywell Batteries, stated, “This is a significant performance breakthrough. Today’s increasingly complex portable devices require much greater battery capacity to run efficiently for an entire work shift. With this technology we have jumped two generations ahead of the OEM battery to provide an approximate 150% increase in capacity with a safer product. The increase in run time is especially important in public safety applications where communications systems are often stretched to the limit.”

According to Honeywell Vice President Michael Grosberg, “In commercial applications, such as mobile computing and data collection, the ability to run for a full shift, and longer, can mean important productivity savings, and a competitive advantage for our customers. Mobile users also appreciate the lighter weight of the NEOcell packs.”

NEOCELLS are priced competitively with standard lithium ion cells. However, with their longer run time, they offer significant financial and competitive advantages.

These new cells are currently available through Honeywell Batteries’ OEM Division for a wide variety of portable devices, including mobile computing, data collection, and voice communications.
