Fleet And Field: How Well Aligned Are Field Service And Fleet Management?

Most field service engineers wouldn’t consider themselves professional drivers. Ask them what they do for a living, they’d probably say their core focus is servicing assets, providing maintenance, and helping customers. Their managers would probably agree.
Yet a large part of a technician’s day is spent behind the wheel, getting from job to job. Fleet managers are typically responsible for ensuring vehicles are ready to use—assisted by the IT department to implement technology like GPS tracking, cameras, and telematics. But when these tools guide field service workers to be more effective and safer drivers, who is taking ownership of them?
It’s a gray area, and the danger is that when fleet and field tools sit between two departments, they aren’t being used to their full potential.
