Field Service Software: Old Dominion Freight Line Deploys Odyssey Software For Cross-Country Management Of Mobile Devices

Enterprise-Scale, Wireless Line-of-Business Applications Deliver Uninterrupted Mobile Device Management with Remote Access

Odyssey Software, Inc., a leading provider of mobile device management solutions, announced that Old Dominion Freight Line, Inc. (ODFL) has deployed Odyssey's mobile application software products to enhance its freight delivery services. This allows ODFL's delivery application to run on Windows Mobile devices, enabling real-time support and seamless data connectivity to drivers' mobile devices in the field for improved productivity and profitability.

ODFL provides freight delivery services throughout 44 states in the US and recently updated its mobile applications to ensure network coverage across its entire territory. In order to deploy the most robust communication layer for its upgraded delivery application, ODFL turned to Odyssey Software's ViaXML2, NetManager, and Athena products to build, deploy and manage the application across an initial fleet of 3,000 drivers and devices.

"Delivering accurate data and routing information to our drivers in the field is imperative to our business," said Barry Craver, director of freight processing applications at ODFL. "With the Odyssey Software line of mobile enterprise application infrastructure and device management solutions, we are able to effectively build and deploy an application that meets all of our device data management needs, integrates seamlessly with the Windows Mobile platform and carries timely information to and from our drivers and other remote workers."

For securely monitoring, managing and maintaining devices in the field, ODFL chose the Odyssey Software Athena solution, the only solution to meet all of ODFL's Windows Mobile device management needs. Utilizing Athena's live, interactive remote access capabilities, ODFL's help desk personnel are able to diagnose, troubleshoot and correct any issues a driver might encounter. Athena also performs better than any other solution in low-bandwidth, high latency conditions.

ViaXML2, Odyssey Software's wireless application infrastructure solution, enables ODFL to integrate with existing backend systems and allows queued, store and forward Web services on the mobile device. ViaXML2 facilitates undisrupted application availability, guaranteed delivery of transactions, the use of multiple WWAN carriers on a single application and just-in-time communication with drivers in the field regarding changes and updates to route information.

ODFL also utilizes the NetManager solution, which manages network connection and battery life by allowing ODFL to select either a WLAN or WWAN connection and disable the unused network adapter, saving device battery life in the field and enabling least-cost routing options.
