Enabling Real-Time Reporting And Data Synchronization

Challenge
A team of 75 sales advisors servicing up to 3,000 retail locations per week are responsible for ensuring that stores display point-of-sale (POS) materials and the video/DVD titles properly to drive sales while maintaining adequate stock on hand and facilitating product returns. The time-consuming, pen-and-paper system resulted in data errors and delays in responding to inventory replenishment and returns. The U.K. office investigated a mobile strategy for 3 years but had yet to see a competitive advantage without real-time data reporting capability to truly leverage the knowledge of field sales advisors and integrate various distribution partners and shipping agents.

Solution
20th Century Fox's U.K. office deployed PDAs and Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones throughout the UK. Faciliated by Extended Systems' mobile data sync and management solution, the technology allows representatives in the field to capture and record data and digital images, and also enables real-time reporting and data synchronization via the Internet along a complex supply chain.

Measure of Success
In just a few months of deployment, 20th Century Fox reported a 10 percent increase in sales of DVDs and videos, as well as improved compliance with POS and merchandising display. Product returns are now facilitated in 24 hours (versus 6-7 weeks), while stock replenishment has been reduced from 3 days to 1 day, improving on-shelf availability by 5 percent. The scan-and-sync process has saved an estimated 150 man-hours of data entry per month while eliminating errors and streamlining data flow. The web-based reporting element enables 24-hour, worldwide access to data. The solution has also impressed retailers and store customers, lifting 20th Century Fox's status and solidifying relationships.
