For many companies, the economic downturn has resulted in cutbacks in nearly every area of the business. As the economy recovers, companies will begin to focus on how to reposition themselves. But it is likely that the "normal" of tomorrow will not look like the "normal" of years past. Managing Director of the McKinsey Quarterly Ian Davis writes, "The business landscape has changed fundamentally. Business models that rely on high leverage will suffer reduced returns. Companies that boost returns to equity the oldfashioned way — through real productivity gains — will be rewarded."
