Databac Develops New UHF Cards & Tags

Source: Field Technologies Magazine
March 9, 2009 -- Databac Group, specialist provider of identification solutions, has developed a range of ultra high-frequency (UHF) cards and tags for contactless identification and tracking of products and persons in a host of applications. Databac's UHF series enables businesses to exploit this robust yet affordable RF technology to streamline their operations, enhance security, boost productivity, reduce costs and increase customer satisfaction. The series includes polyester CR80-sized UHF cards suitable for printing using dye-sublimation and retransfer card printers.

The technology's large read range makes it ideal for asset tagging, baggage tracking, warehousing, and supply chain management, particularly in retail, logistics, pharmaceutical, and manufacturing industries. Databac will also push UHF usage towards emerging applications which involve the identification of people. Examples include automated timing at sports events, tracking visitor movements at exhibitions, and monitoring staff whereabouts in office buildings for health & safety.

Databac Group managing director Charles Balcomb said: "Readers can pick up and record movements of UHF tags in real time from a distance of up to 20 metres -- even more depending on the reader used. Racing and visitor tracking are just the tip of the iceberg in terms of potential applications."

"We have manufactured RFID cards for decades and UHF is a technology that has tremendous potential," Balcomb continued. "Its read range and price makes it the perfect replacement for barcodes. It is an international, open standard that is suitable for tracking the smallest product right up to the largest pallet and is just as capable at identifying people. It offers outstanding performance coupled with low cost. We have no doubt: this is going to be a winner."

As a manufacturer, Databac offers unprecedented options in terms of construction. Databac's UHF series is available in a variety of formats, including CR80 cards, pallet tags and luggage tags, made from a choice of materials. They can be supplied as plain white or pre-printed and protected by a number of optional security features.

Databac's printable polyester UHF cards in particular boast a host of benefits. Besides the ability to print directly onto their surface using dye-sub and retransfer printers, they provide excellent protection to the RFID module and aerial compared with PVC and polycarbonate equivalents. They also feature anti-static properties, which is beneficial when dealing with electronic circuits like RFID. In addition, Databac's polyester cards can withstand more than double the amount of flexes and IC mechanical stress than PVC cards and are more environmentally-friendly. Databac UHF cards can also include other technologies such as Mifare or Legic combinations, for use in multiple applications.

Databac can provide a wide range of colour printers and software for personalisation of both UHF tags and credit card sized cards. A card personalisation bureau and on-site printing and encoding are also available. Databac's UHF series of cards is compliant with RFID international standard EPC Global UHF Class 1 Generation 2.
