Cellular Performance Management Software Enhances Officer Safety And Productivity

Source: NetMotion Wireless

The St. Paul Police IT Department wanted to find out why officers were experiencing an increasing amount of dropped wireless connections to their computers in the field. Officers were growing frustrated with their inability to stay connected to dispatch systems and information databases as they moved from location to location. Officers have since experienced a boost in their productivity and the IT team has removed a major bottleneck.

A History of Low Visibility

The St. Paul Police Department serves more than 280,000 residents and employs 800 people across its three divisions: Major Crimes, Operations, and Administration/Support Services. The city’s nearly 600 sworn officers respond to some 200,000 calls a year.

Officers began reporting an increasing number of dropped connections as they were wirelessly accessing resources, writing police reports, and doing other work on their laptops from their squad cars. These drops were hindering the officers’ ability to be as productive as possible while out on patrols. But given the city’s diverse carrier, device and network implementations, and very limited visibility into how these services and technologies were performing, it was difficult for the department’s IT team to troubleshoot the issues and determine the source of the dropped connections
