ADT Introduces New RFID Mobile Cart
New Product Offers RFID Mobility and Flexibility by Taking Readers to Tags
March 27, 2007 — ADT Security Services, a part of Tyco Fire & Security, today announced the introduction of a radio frequency identification (RFID) mobile cart designed to provide RFID mobility within storage room and warehouse environments. The mobile cart lowers costs and increases inventory efficiencies by bringing RFID readers to the tags instead of passing tags through stationary readers installed at the warehouse doors.
The Sensormatic® RFID Mobile Cart is equipped with an EPCglobal Gen 2 UHF RFID reader and has antennas attached to a 180-degree rotating extendable tower. The cart is powered by an on-board battery with an eight-hour operating time making it ideal for use in warehouses, distribution centers and storage rooms. Easily maneuvered by one person, the cart reads RFID tags as it is pushed through a facility. The antenna tower extends up to 16 feet, reaching standardized shelving used in warehouse situations, and the antenna tower can be expanded and collapsed on demand.
"RFID mobility cuts the time it takes to do inventory to a fraction of what it typically takes," said Randy Dunn, director of RFID for ADT. "The mobile cart is more efficient at capturing tag reads in a shorter period of time than an employee moving through a facility with a handheld device. Mobile cart users also are spared the expense of installing additional stationary readers every several feet."
The compact design of the cart lets it move through doors and aisles with ease and the cart's mobility allows it to be a stand-in for a malfunctioning or failed fixed reader anywhere in a facility, shortening down times and keeping the system doing its job.
"We believe this concept brings true flexibility and added ROI to RFID solutions in storage facilities," said Dunn. "As more and more of our customers look at this product, they are coming up with more creative and productive uses for mobile RFID."
