Executive Outlook: Powering Remote Assets For Higher Profitability

To achieve optimum ROI for field assets, the choice of power supply is a critical decision. Lithium thionyl chloride (LiSOCL2) chemistry is often considered the chemistry of choice for remote applications due to its unique ability to deliver 25 years of continuous service life. Several types of lithium thionyl chloride cells are available. Spirally wound LiSOCL2 cells are capable of achieving an expected service life of up to 10 years. Bobbin-type LiSOCL2 chemistry has been proven highly reliable for active RFID asset tracking applications, including the EZ-Pass electronic toll collection system, as well as remote wireless devices such as AMR (automated meter reading) systems, environmental sensors, and similar devices that require 20- to 30- year battery life.
