DeWALT is a manufacturer of more than 300 power tool and equipment products and more than 800 power tool accessories, with more than 1,000 factory-owned and authorized locations. After conducting a survey of more than 1,500 construction professionals, DeWALT found that job site security was the number one concern among construction industry end users and buyers.

The DeWALT study showed that 97% of construction professionals were concerned about job site theft, which causes losses of more than $1 billion in the United States per year. More than 60% of those surveyed indicated that tool theft was their biggest concern and posed the greatest financial threat to profitability. More than 50% reported they had equipment stolen within the past year.

DeWALT partnered with Numerex to develop and market wireless security solutions for the construction industry. The two companies introduced DeWALT SITELOCK in 2005. Building on SITELOCK, a portable security solution that wirelessly monitors equipment and areas on a job site, DeWALT and Numerex teamed again to bring the benefits of GPS technology to construction job sites. They developed the DeWALT MOBILELOCK GPS locator with antitheft alarm, a stand-alone, portable, rugged wireless locating and alarm system that is mounted to construction equipment. MOBILELOCK has a GPS locator that helps locate lost or stolen assets and transmits an alarm any time a protected piece of equipment is disturbed. With Numerex Networks, which provides telecommunications between the onboard device, the mobile application, and the end user, and Numerex SMSXpress gateway, alarm notifications are sent to the central monitoring station and up to three users via phone or e-mail 24 hours a day.

Reducing theft on the job site offers immediate financial impacts. An example is Altius Building Co. of Brookfield, WI. Altius implemented MOBILELOCK at a high-end building renovation that had been broken into nine times in four months, resulting in thousands of dollars in lost tools and materials. Within one week Altius had caught the thief who broke in through a window and set off  the MOBILELOCK antitheft alarm. Altius has been theft-free since.
