Xplore Technologies just announced the RangerX tablet, a sleek, lightweight Android tablet perfect for a wide array of applications. This Q&A Xplore discusses this new tablet and more.
Field Technologies: You just announced your first Android-based tablet (having always been Windows-based previously) – can you tell us a bit about the catalyst for this product (i.e. what were you hearing from your customer base that let you know you needed to introduce a Windows alternative)?
Xplore: The design for the new RangerX rugged Android tablet is based largely on customer feedback and business needs. We have had a significant number of customers tell us that while they love our ultra-rugged iX104C series, they’d like to have a lower cost, lighter weight device to deploy to a larger population of their field force. In particular, our customers are in need of a tablet that can work in challenging environments, but are not quite as extreme that they require hazardous location certifications or the ability to withstand a 7-foot drop. We’ve also had a number of our customers tell us that they’re moving their applications and resources to cloud-based deployment models, particularly their in-house developed applications. Our customers wanted us to provide a tablet that delivers the rugged features they expect from Xplore with always on connectivity, but use a lower cost architecture than Windows requires. Android was the perfect solution for both scenarios.
