2015: The Year Of The Electronic Logging Mandate
By Sid Nair, director of product management, Teletrac, www.teletrac.com
Transportation organizations, listen up: here’s how the electronic logging mandate will impact you.
2015 is a defining year for technology and federal regulations. For many years, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has vacillated on when, where, and who should comply with compliance standards for electronic logging devices (ELDs).
If the proposed rule is passed : all interstate commercial truck and bus companies are required to have electronic logging devices in their vehicles to govern the number of hours their drivers work, also known as hours of service (HOS).
Once passed, fleet managers have two years to comply with the rule. The implementation of the ELD mandate will achieve two significant goals: one, reduce HOS violations by making it nearly impossible for drivers or carriers to misrepresent driver log times and two, drastically improve public safety on the road.
