The Role Of BYOD In Transportation

By Kim Drouillard, Director of Sales and Implementation, Sylectus

For many smaller fleets, automating common business practices with telematics hardware can be expensive and out of reach, inhibiting their growth and ability to meet customer demands, and in some cases, even hindering operations. Unable to invest in costly in-cab hardware, smaller fleets have traditionally turned to paper logs and emails to manage their business operations, limiting productivity and harming their bottom line.

In today’s quickly-evolving transportation industry, technology is king. From drivers relying on the latest in-cab technologies to customers expecting real-time tracking updates on their shipments, smaller fleets can’t afford to forgo technology enhancements if they want to thrive amongst their larger technology-savvy counterparts.

The BYOD Movement

Stuck between a rock and a hard place, many fleets are turning to mobile technology to change the way they operate. The “bring your own device,” or BYOD initiative is allowing fleet managers to put technology in the hands of their drivers and eliminating the need for expensive in-cab equipment. With more than 65 percent of truck drivers now using smart phones to communicate with family and friends while out on the road, adopting a management strategy that incorporates mobile devices is an ideal solution for smaller carriers looking to grow their business while reducing operational  costs.
