Publisher/Editor-In-Chief Sarah Nicastro talks one-on-one with Jay Dietz of KONE, Inc. about the pros and cons of a DIY software approach.

When I first talked with Jay Dietz about KONE’s field operations, it was immediately apparent that the company knows what it’s doing when it comes to field mobility. KONE has been leveraging mobile applications since the early 2000s, and started out with its mobile initiative at a time when doing so wasn’t the norm like it is today.

That led KONE down the path of developing its own software solutions to accomplish the goals the company had set forth — an approach that’s worked well for them, but that Dietz wouldn’t recommend today considering the variety of solutions readily available. Here, Dietz shares with us his experience from KONE’s application development and his thoughts on why you’re better off taking advantage of the solutions on the market.
