Leveraging Technology To Improve Driver Safety

Source: Trimble

The latest Global Status Report on Road Safety states that more than 3,000 people worldwide are killed every day in road crashes, with 1.24 million annual deaths and 50 million serious injuries.

Organizations operating large fleets are the most susceptible to accidents, since vehicles driven for work purposes account for the highest mileage on U.S. roads. Not surprisingly, organizations with fleets have a responsibility to ensure that their workers have the equipment and conditions needed to drive safely and efficiently. Clearly, driver safety needs to be a priority and organizations with fleets must employ the appropriate tools and technologies to mitigate road risk and promote a safe driving culture.

Leveraging technology to manage driver behavior

In-vehicle driver safety solutions have been successful in helping fleet and field service organizations to monitor and manage driver behavior, and subsequently reduce accident rates, vehicle downtime and prevent lost productivity due to road incidents. According to the World Health Organization, just a 5 percent reduction in the average speed can diminish the number of fatal crashes by as much as 3 percent.

Fleet managers can monitor excessive speeding, as well as other aggressive behaviors, with a driver safety solution. Once deployed, these solutions send real time alerts to the driver as well as to the back office so drivers can change their behavior and the back office can use the data to identify who needs coaching, helping to reduce accidents and mitigate risks associated with road-related accidents.
