Fixed Versus Mobile Deployment: The Benefits Of Truly Mobile Docking Systems
Many organizations, including public safety, utility, warehousing, military, and field service have debated the merits of permanently fixed vs. mobile computing solutions. Simply put, the fixed in-vehicle devices are permanently mounted in a vehicle, mobile card or forklift for use by the mobile worker or field personnel. They cannot be removed without using tools and a technician.
The mobile computing device, however, uses a flexible implementation whereby the device can be mounted via a mobile docking station. When the user wishes to remove the unit, the mobile computer is simply undocked by the worker and removed for use outside of the vehicle.
In looking beyond the primary and/or immediate application for the computing device, several organizations have opted to deploy truly mobile solutions that can be docked and undocked or moved into the field as a portable computer. This increasing trend is based on the measurable benefits offered by the truly mobile computing device versus the fixed alternative.
