Diebold finds savings and reduced environmental impact after implementing game-based driver performance program.

Spireon, the industry’s leading provider of mobile resource management (MRM) and business intelligence solutions used by companies to maximize their mobile assets and workforce, along with partner, Diebold, Incorporated, a global leader in self-service technology, security systems and related services, report significant reductions in Diebold’s carbon footprint.

Diebold has utilized Spireon’s FleetLocate GPS fleet management platform to ensure the safe, efficient, productive and timely performance of its vehicle fleet. In 2012, the FleetLocate Joe Gibbs Driver Performance Program was piloted in an effort to support Diebold’s initiatives to improve driver safety and reduce the company’s carbon footprint. This co-branded program, developed by Spireon with Joe Gibbs Racing, is the industry’s only game-based driver performance program, designed to improve driver behavior through positive reinforcement, recognition, and contest-based incentives.

“It was easy to see that Diebold would benefit from the expansion of the driver performance program,” says Rich Pearlman, Director of Product Management, Fleet Services Group at Spireon. “Through gamification, drivers didn’t just improve behavior. They were given the tools and motivation needed to ensure Diebold achieved its safety and environmental goals.”

After the first season of Driver Performance, Diebold saw measurable improvements in multiple areas, including a reduction of vehicle speeds, idle time, hard braking and hard acceleration – all factors in fuel consumption.

Diebold’s commitment the environment has evolved into an official Fleet Management Environmental Policy. FleetLocate and the Driver Performance Program are cornerstones of the program, affecting the first five out of 10 tenets in Diebold’s approach:

  1. Encourage employees to observe eco-friendly driving habits
  2. Collect and analyze fleet data
  3. Apply best practices driving techniques
  4. Train eco-friendly driving habits
  5. Discourage vehicle idling
  6. Service vehicles to maintain optimum performance
  7. Plan the most efficient routes
  8. Purchase ISO 14000 compliant vehicles
  9. Purchase low CO2 vehicles
  10. Apply standards to rental cars used for business

Diebold also reports an impressive 15% reduction in fuel purchasing and a 15% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

“The data generated shows that we actually saved money through eco-friendly initiatives,” says Linda Parcher, VP, Global Supply Chain at Diebold. “Monitoring and modifying driver behavior is a key factor in achieving our environmental goals.”
