Part 1: Generate Green By Going Green

By Steven Brown, president, Intergis

Using a combination of global positioning system (GPS) technologies tied to routing, scheduling, dispatching applications, and wireless and Internet communications, mobile resource management is an advancement of significant proportions in an increasingly mobile world of business.

In a 2009 survey of service executive conducted by the Aberdeen Group, 68% of respondents listed increased productivity and improved resource utilization as their top priority for business improvement — but less than 20% listed reducing environmental impact as their top priority. At the same time, the Aberdeen State of the Market 2009 Report indicated that 51% of respondents reported having a green initiative in place, with 27% of those saying the initiative had been in place for more than three years. Although there has been a sharp increase in those feeling the pressure to be environmentally responsible from just one year ago, Aberdeen concluded that environmental issues continue to "take a back seat to cost management and service delivery." The current economic environment has also had a role in pushing green projects further down the list of "must-dos." Regardless of the urgency, incentives and mandates to go green, financial realities may have convinced you to wait.

The truth is greening your fleet and workforce delivers all the improvements on your wish list, including reduced costs, increased productivity, greater resource utilization, speed of delivery, improved customer satisfaction, improved safety and more. In short, you can "have it all."
