How To Prepare Networks For The Impact Of The Internet Of Things

By Jim Rapoza, Research Director, Information Technology, Aberdeen

In this Aberdeen report, we’ll look at how organizations today are challenged to both deploy the Internet of Things (IoT) and to do so effectively. We’ll also analyze how leading businesses are upgrading and optimizing their network infrastructures to better handle the wave of data that is coming from IoT.

To hear some people talk about the devices that make up IoT, it would be easy to think of these devices as butterflies, with a feather-like impact on the networks they run on.

After all, these are typically simple machines sending minimal information over networks.

Of course, everyone has heard of the Butterfly Effect (hopefully not just from the awful Ashton Kutcher movie), where a butterfly flapping its wings causes a storm on the other side of the world. But when it comes to the impact of IoT on networks, I tend to think of a different kind of butterfly effect.

Imagine you’re standing in a field, and all of a sudden, a million butterflies fly into you. That would be a pretty severe impact.

And when it comes to networks, this kind of impact is a perfect analogy when it comes to how IoT will affect them, and how businesses need to prepare their infrastructures to handle this massive demand
