Unlike most of us, when Carl Johnson talks about putting out fires, he's not talking about the figurative kind of fires. Johnson, who is captain of Fire Station 16 within the Denver Fire Department (DFD) (Denver), is a real fireman who fights real fires. In fact, in 2003, the DFD responded to 2,830 fire calls in addition to performing nearly 46,000 rescues. The DFD employs 930 uniformed and civilian workers and consists of six divisions. The divisions include: Operations, Fire Prevention and Investigation, Technical Services, Administrative Services, Safety and Training, and Denver Airport Rescue and Firefighting.
One of the goals of the DFD is to help firefighters get familiar with commercial facilities while eliminating potential fire hazards. This process, which the fire department calls either a fire safety inspection or a preplan inspection, is done so that, in the event of a fire, firefighters can more quickly locate and extinguish the fire at its source.
