Case Study: DRS Rugged Tablet PC Helps Reduce Waste, Boost Efficiency

RSI Home Products, a leading manufacturer of kitchen, bath and home organization products, maintains an intense focus on efficiency and continuous improvement. A rugged tablet PC from DRS Technologies helps fulfill this mission at RSI's Tijuana, Mexico, facility that manufactures one-piece bathroom vanity countertop and sink combinations.

The production process involves filling molds with a resin matrix. Due to the variety of mold sizes and product colors, the matrix, which is the consistency of soft-serve ice cream, is not automatically dispensed. Until recently, the machine operator eyeballed the process and decided on his own when to stop filling the mold. The result was inconsistency: too little matrix resulted in poor quality and rejected product, too much meant wasted material.

RSI turned to Taylor Data Systems, a Florence, S.C., company specializing in automated data collection, custom application development and systems integration. Together they developed an algorithm based on the mold type and volume to determine the optimal fill. This information is transmitted to a computer via an RFID reader just upstream from the fill station.
