Sales agents and claims adjusters traditionally relied on capturing and reporting data by handwriting on multipart and other forms, often with a less than professional copy left with the customer or faxed to them later. The completed forms were then transcribed into printed documents generated in the office and printed copies were sent back to the customer. This posed multiple problems: data capture errors in the field; transcription errors caused by handwriting variations; customer dissatisfaction from the lag times in data processing and generating printed responses; and the cost, distribution and resupply issues of multipart forms.

The advent of laptop PCs, tablets and handheld computers plus widespread access to high-speed wireless communications alleviated many of the problems with accurate data capture in the field.

Insurance professionals could now enter data directly into on-screen forms, which could improve accuracy and limit the need to return to the office to deliver that data. Still, distributed mobile printing solutions were needed to complete the cycle and reduce the lag time between the visit to the customer and returning the written response – whether that was an agreement, contract, a policy adjustment, documentation of a claim, or an estimate from the adjuster for repairs.
